As part of the Arena Football League (AFL) expansion in the spring of 2019, the Atlantic City Blackjacks were established and selected Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ as their home. Spectra, who provides venue management for the arena, started planning where and how to build the space needed soon after.
Clayton Salmon, Boardwalk Hall’s carpenter foreman, designed the layout of the stadium and worked with the union carpenters of Local 255 to lay the turf. For the past 30 years, Local 255 has been involved in the construction of all amenities at Boardwalk Hall. The added history and success partnering with Spectra, made the decision to enlist Local 255 on this project an easy one to make.
Local 255’s carpenters built 90-degree corners into the stadiums existing hockey rink, then laid out and secured the artificial turf. The carpenters specifically focused on putting the turf down in sections to ensure the team logo is assembled properly. Once that was completed, they installed padding on the surrounding boards and applied advertisements from team sponsors.
“We have been working to develop a positive change in the atmosphere at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall,” said Spectra’s Jim Wynkoop, General Manager of the venue. “This new venture and our partnership with Local 255 will surely help us accomplish this goal.”
Spectra, a leader in hosting and entertainment, took over operations at Atlantic City’s premier sports and entertainment venue in 2014. Since that time, they have partnered with the Keystone + Mountain + Lakes carpenters on several projects, including the Wells Fargo Center (previously known as the Wachovia Center) which is home to Philadelphia’s major league sports teams: the Flyers, 76ers, the Soul and the Wings.
Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall and the Atlantic City Convention Center are owned and funded by the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA). Spectra provides both Venue Management and Food Services & Hospitality to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall and the Atlantic City Convention Center.
